Irish Quilt Bed Turning

Quilts – A Patchwork of Our Lives. Come celebrate the artistic expressions of quilts past and present. A bed turning featuring vintage and antique quilts will be presented by members of the local quilt guilds. A bed turning is a way to introduce quilters and non-quilters to the beauty of antique or unique quilts. As each quilt is turned on a bed and held up for the audience, the quilt is described, dated and the story of the quilt is given.

The bed turning begins at 2:30 pm in the Gallery Ballroom at the Great Irish Fair of New Ulm on March 14. The presentation is free and open to the public. For your pleasure, afternoon Irish scones and tea will be served at a cost of $5 pp.

The Irish Chain Quilt

Quilting was introduced in Ireland back in the 18th century by way of England. It appears that the wealthier women took to the craft in the beginning, and lower income families soon followed. Old clothes and linens were cut up and sewn into patchwork quilts. Many of those old quilts were sewn with no middle layer, or batting, due to lack of supplies. Common Irish quilt designs were simple or crazy patchwork, log cabins, baskets, and chain.

Irish chain quilts are named after a measuring tool that consists of small squares and strips. There are different varieties and layouts, including the single, double and triple chain. Source craftsy.com.

The performance activities are funded by the Prairie Lakes Regional Arts Council with an appropriation from the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the State’s general fund. Additional funding was received from the New Ulm Area Foundation, the New Ulm Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau and the Gislason & Hunter Law Firm.
